The next morning, they depart agonizingly early. Jessa hates it, wordlessly and powerfully, but they need to reach campus before the registrar's office closes. She intends to follow their meticulous schedule without a hitch. No fucking way will she be the cause of any difficulty during Amaia's first day on campus.

It's so early the sun isn't up yet—so early the coffee can't work fast enough and the roads are nearly empty. Jessa's brain is still rebooting a solid forty minutes into the drive.

Just before the one-hour mark, she remembers.

She kissed Amaia last night.

Fuck. She kissed Amaia last night.

Glancing over at the passenger seat with her heart in her throat, she finds Amaia staring out the window way too intently for the dark pile of nothing outside. Jessa puts her eyes back on the road. Shakes herself. Tries very hard not to jump to conclusions. Yeah, they've both been quiet this morning, but that doesn't have to herald disaster. The sun hasn't even risen yet. Silence doesn't prove out the worst of her fears; it just means they're both tired.

Perfectly reasonable after two days of driving and minimal sleep.

But now Jessa is actively searching for a way to start a conversation, and she's spinning her wheels without getting any traction. It's an unfamiliar experience. She's not used to consciously filling silences around Amaia, any more than she's used to coming up blank for topics of discussion. Damn it. Today might already be too awkward to redeem, and what is she supposed to do with that?

This isn't fair. Her memory of last night may be coming back hazy with exhaustion, but she could almost swear Amaia kissed her back. Which should be amazing, but instead leaves Jessa all the more crushed beneath the knowledge that this is their last day on the road. The final stretch. Tomorrow morning is goodbye.

What if they part on this wrong-footed rockslide? What if Amaia is pissed off and too nice to say so? What if she doesn't look at Jessa once through the entire rest of the day?

What if the drifting apart Jessa's already dreading ends up expedited, because they don't know how to talk to each other in the wake of a kiss Jessa barely remembers?

No. She won't let that happen. She will not sit the entire remaining distance in wordless discomfort, and she sure as hell won't vanish without figuring out what Amaia thinks. She'll ask about the kiss outright if that's what it takes.

Just as soon as she figures out how.

With her eyes scanning the dark intersection ahead, Jessa draws a slow breath and says, "Hey." Then, when Amaia straightens up in her peripheral vision, "Did you spot the package of donuts my aunt snuck into the cooler?"

"Yeah." There's a cautious smile in Amaia's voice, but Jessa doesn't turn her head to confirm. "Want me to open them?"

"God yes." Breakfast got left by the wayside in their rush to hit the road. Jessa is hungry now, though. Almost as sincerely eager for a donut as she is for the excuse and distraction of food.
